FF XIIIThe upcoming and highly anticipated RPG that is Final Fantasy XIII is finally set for release in PAL and NTSC territories, but unlike the PS3 version which will ship on a single Blu-Ray disc, the Xbox 360 version will span three discs as expected.

Though three discs may seem a lot and will no doubt temporarily annoy gamers, considering the likes of Lost Odyssey shipped on four discs with relatively little fuss, I’m sure there will be few complaints about FFXIII’s disc-swapping interruptions, especially following the long anticipation of the series’ 13th installment.

The news follows reports that with the title originally set for a release on PS2, the switch to PS3 cost Square Enix a year-and-a-half, according to senior producer Yoshinori Kitase.

“Final Fantasy XIII was originally meant to be a PS2 title, but we had to switch systems due to the arrival of the PS3," Kitase says. "That cost us about one and a half years and was constantly a case of trial and error. However, because we worked so hard at the beginning, we got to a cruising speed much faster then anticipated and therefore could start on the translation and international voice recording process at an early stage of the development. It’s because of this that we can release both the European as well as the American version barely three months after the Japanese release."

Final Fantasy XIII is set for release on March 9th.
